What broadband can I get in Newcastle?

Newcastle-upon-Tyne offers an excellent range of broadband deals, from affordable superfast packages for casual users to ultrafast full fibre connections for gamers, streamers and large households.

There are multiple different types of broadband available across the city, and there’s a good chance Newcastle residents have access to at least one of them. This means you will likely have a range of options to choose from at your address, letting you choose a speed, price and provider that suits you.

Newcastle enjoys access to a variety of broadband options. We’ll help you find the perfect deal for your needs.

What’s the fastest broadband in Newcastle?

Our 2024 broadband study revealed that the North East had the second-fastest average download speeds of all UK regions, second only to London. As a result, there’s no shortage of speedy broadband options in the regional capital of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Virgin Media provides some of Newcastle's fastest widely available options, with a median speed test result of 162Mbps, according to the Fair Internet Report. Ultrafast options offering up to 1.1Gbps are also available.

TalkTalk, Vodafone, Plusnet, and Sky also provide competitively priced ultrafast packages delivering around 900-910Mbps across a broad range of NE1, NE2, NE3, NE4, and NE6 postcodes.

Use our postcode checker and sort results by ‘speed (high to low)’ to compare the fastest broadband available at your address. It will display a comprehensive list of broadband packages and estimated speeds tailored to your exact location in Newcastle.

Can you get full fibre broadband in Newcastle?

Full fibre broadband is widely available across Newcastle, with almost all areas enjoying access to ultrafast speeds and reliable fixed-line connections from a number of different broadband networks.

Nationwide providers Openreach and cable broadband provider Virgin Media offer the most extensive coverage across Newcastle, but the region benefits from a number of smaller alternative full fibre networks too.

The only parts of the greater Newcastle area without strong full fibre coverage appear to be in the south west in Hebburn, Jarrow, Harton and surrounding neighbourhoods. This is except for South Shields which has good full fibre coverage from alternative providers.

Can I get 5G broadband in Newcastle?

In order to have a good experience with 5G broadband, you need to make sure that you choose a network with a strong indoor 5G connection where you live. Otherwise, the 5G signal will get blocked by too many buildings to offer the speeds you’ll want from it.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the 5G coverage strength across Newcastle from each of the main UK mobile networks:

  • EE: Strong indoor 5G coverage in central Newcastle. Patchier coverage in outer regions of the city, including parts of Jesmond, Fenham, Kenton and Heaton.
  • Vodafone: Good indoor 5G signal in central Newcastle, Graingern Town, Ouseburn and Byker. Poorer signal in Jesmond, Heaton, Arthurs Hill and further south in Gateshead.
  • O2: Good outdoor coverage of 5G across the city, except for pockets in the north east near Jesmond. Indoor 5G signal strength not specified.
  • Three: Pockets of strong indoor 5G coverage in the city centre, Arthurs Hill and further north in Spital Tongues.

If you live in or around Newcastle, 5G broadband could be a viable home internet option. As Newcastle has 5G standalone network access, you’ll likely get high speeds and good reliability. However, the signal strength in your home may differ from what you experience on mobile data.

Which broadband providers are in Newcastle?

The majority of the UK’s major providers are represented in Newcastle. Here's a summary of our best providers that offer broadband packages in the city.

Virgin Media

Virgin Media is one of the top providers in Newcastle and nationwide. Compared to other major providers, it offers the best median speeds of 162Mbps (far exceeding the national average of 68Mbps), with ultrafast packages reaching lightning speeds of over 1Gpbs.

Virgin’s up-and-coming full fibre network Nexfibre also has good availability in Byker, Gosforth and in multiple neighbourhoods west of the city.

When paired with other services in offers like the Mega Volt Bundle, which includes a 250GB O2 SIM and access to 230+ TV channels, Virgin Media’s broadband is excellent value for money.

Sky

Sky is our most popular provider in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. It offers superfast packages with speeds of up to 61Mbps across the city and competitively priced ‘Gigafast’ packages boasting speeds upwards of 900Mbps in some areas.

BT

Leveraging the Openreach network, BT offers value-for-money packages across Newcastle, with reliable connections and median speeds of around 58Mbps recorded in the city and surrounding areas.

Ultrafast options, recording speeds of over 1Gbps, are also available. Plus, many BT deals include additional features like the powerful Smart Hub Wi-Fi router, sports channels, and the optional BT Halo Wi-Fi guarantee.

Vodafone and TalkTalk

Vodafone and TalkTalk also operate on the Openreach part fibre network to provide great-value, widely available deals. Their full fibre options are either provided by Openreach or CityFibre, depending on which network is available to your home.

Alternative broadband providers in Newcastle

Newcastle’s vast full fibre coverage is supported by a high number of smaller alternative broadband networks (known as ‘altnets’) with good full fibre coverage across the city. Here’s a rundown of where each of them are available across the wider region:

  • CityFibre: The largest altnet in the UK, and the third-largest broadband network behind Openreach and Virgin Media, has great full fibre coverage in north western areas of Newcastle in Percy Main, and central Newcastle in Heaton and Walker. It also has full fibre availability south of the Tyne in Felling and Wardley.
  • Grain Connect: Full fibre availability in central areas of Newcastle near Arthur’s Hill, Sandyford and Heaton. And east of the city, there’s coverage in Wallsend, North Shields, South Shields and Tynemouth.
  • Hyperoptic: Pockets of availability in select apartment buildings in the city centre. Some coverage South Shields and also north west of the city in areas like Denton and Westerhoke.
  • Wildcard Networks: Good coverage in parts of the city centre.
Our broadband expert says

“Newcastle-upon-Tyne’s broadband landscape has improved significantly in recent years, now recording average download speeds more than 29% above the UK average.

Top providers like Virgin Media, Sky, BT, and TalkTalk operate across Newcastle, offering widely-available part-fibre packages for casual users and ultrafast packages with speeds beyond 1Gbps.

However, according to Ofcom, 83% of all UK properties now have access to an ultrafast broadband connection. As a result, if gigabit broadband is not currently available in your Newcastle postcode, keep using our postcode checker, as it may become available soon.”

How can I get the best broadband deals in Newcastle-upon-Tyne?

There’s no shortage of great broadband options in Newcastle. You’ll want to make sure you’re getting the best price. However, cost is just one aspect to consider.

It’s important to evaluate your household's needs. Larger households with multiple users need reliable connections, and activities like gaming and streaming require better download speeds.

Access to the fastest packages will depend on your exact location, provider options, and property type. For example, homes in Jesmond or newly developed areas may have access to gigabit speeds of 1Gbps. In contrast, properties in parts of Newcastle with outdated infrastructure may still rely on part fibre or ADSL connections, which offer slower speeds.

Use our postcode checker to find the best broadband deals in Newcastle. You can sort results by speed, price, and contract length to find our best broadband deals for your address.
